Things to do in Bournemouth, beyond the beach

Make a day of the gardens, coastal walks, local arts and neighbourhood stops, with room to follow your own interests.

Follow the gardens through the centre

The gardens are a useful starting point if you want a Bournemouth outing that includes more than the beach. Combine a gentle wander with a stop around the Square, then decide whether to continue towards the pier or explore the shops and cafes inland.

Keep the day manageable rather than trying to cover the whole resort. The town centre, gardens and promenade offer different surfaces and gradients. If access matters, look at the current visitor information and choose the entry point and distance that suit your group.

Choose your stretch of coast

Bournemouth Pier and Boscombe Pier are separate landmarks, with different neighbourhoods behind them. A beach walk can lead towards a meal in Boscombe or Southbourne, while Westbourne offers a useful inland stop on the western side of town.

For a quieter outing, leave time to sit, watch the sea and enjoy a local cafe instead of making the walk a route march. The visitor guide has information about beaches, transport and facilities. Use current notices for the day, particularly when the weather changes.

Make space for art, performance or making

Bournemouth has plenty to do away from the sand. Look at the Russell-Cotes visitor information for an art and heritage visit, or Pavilion Dance South West for performances and classes. Creative workshops and independent studios offer another way to spend time locally, especially when you would rather be indoors.

Choose the activity first, then build the rest of the day around its location. A visit to a town-centre arts venue pairs differently with lunch than an afternoon exploring Westbourne's shops. Check the organiser's current programme and booking arrangements before setting out.
