Start with BCP Council
Bournemouth is part of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council, usually shortened to BCP Council. It is the starting point for council services including waste collections, council tax, local planning, roads and libraries within its area.
Dorset in a postal address does not mean Dorset Council is the authority responsible. If you live near the edge of the council area, use your actual address to find the correct service. Begin with the current council website rather than an old Bournemouth Borough Council page or a search result with an outdated contact.
Use a library close to home
Bournemouth Library in the Triangle offers books, study space, public internet access and local heritage resources. Neighbourhood libraries provide other useful starting points, so you need not travel into the centre for every visit.
The council's library pages list current facilities and activities for each branch. Look for the service you need, whether that is help using a computer, a reading group or a room for a meeting. Check the branch's arrangements before going, especially for sessions that need a booking.
Find the group as well as the building
Community halls, sports clubs and voluntary organisations are spread across Bournemouth's neighbourhoods. Moordown Community Centre, local arts organisations and the YMCA are examples of places to begin, but the right contact depends on whether you want a class, a room or a particular service.
A venue timetable can include activities run by independent organisers. Ask the relevant group about joining, accessibility and any equipment you should bring; ask the venue about room hire and facilities. BCP's community-centre information and Family Information Directory can help you locate an appropriate starting point.
